NRL-22 Scope Recommendations

Our local Club is getting started with NRL-22. I've attended a few practice sessions with my very old "base class" 10-22 with a older Weaver T-10 fixed focus scope. The only multi-focus scope I own is a 15-55 Nightforce Competion with a plain reticle - which I can't use for obvious reasons.

There are a large number of moderately priced 6-24 power class scopes available but I have no experience in this area.

I'd like to hear opinions on the best quality scopes suitable for the NRL-22 base class.

Thanks

Jan

I run Nightforce NX8 4-32 F1
I see a lot of Vortex Razor, Leupold and recently ZCO on the line

I would highly recommend the Bushnell Match Pro ED. I've been running it now for about 5 months and it punches way above its weight. It has all the features you need for a great price which leaves some additional money for ammo.

Biggest thing is you want a first focal plane. Decide what you want to spend and it will dictate a lot of what I would recommend. For ‘value’ I like the Burris XTR III’s.

Thanks for the info.

NRL-22 imposes a base-class maximum msrp of $1300.00 for the rifle and scope. The current msrp for my 10-22 is $439.00 which means the scope is limited to a msrp of $861.00.

Building a FFP scope with assorted bells and whistles below a price point of $861.00 requires design and manufacturing compromises. So, to stay in the base class, I'm trying to find the best value among a vast offering of mediocre scopes.

Take a look at the Arken scopes. I have a SH-4 6-24X on my Kidd 10/22 and it punches way above it's price. It would be more than adequate for NRL-22. They're priced even lower now. In fact, if I was to buy another I'd go with the EP-5 5-25X. One thing I should note is that they're huge if that matters to you

Thanks. I've read a lot of complimentary reviews of the SH-4J and the EP-5. The majority of the negative reviews are problems with Arken customer service.

I can buy the SH-4J for $348.00 shipped or the EP-5 for $499.00 shipped.

I will use this scope infrequently at 200 yards and never beyond 200 yards. Accordingly, I'm not at all sure that I need the EP-5 but, paying an extra $150.00 for a brighter scope is tempting.

I used a Athlon Helios BTR (that I bought on sale) for PRS-22 shooting targets out to 350 yds. It worked ok for the price but certainly not as nice as the much higher priced scopes. IMO the Arken SH-4 is a lot better than the Athlon Helios for less money. Again, it'll ever be a $2K scope but I think it'll be fine for what you're wanting to do with it. You can always upgrade down the road sometime if you end up shooting a lot of NRL-22 or PRS-22 and feel you need something better

1. Arken SH & EP series
2. Athlon midas tac 6-24
3. Bushnell match pro ED

Listed them in order of price and glass quality follows that as well in my opinion. Those are the most dominant scopes I see in the budge/base/production class I see at least in my area. Of course the msrp of the scope and your rifle will play some roll in which one is right for you, but my advice for someone new to PRS/NRL and FFP scopes would be pick a reticle that makes since to you at 18-25 power as thats where you'll be living on it. All the scopes I mentioned have good zero stop mechanisms, ok to good feeling turrets, parallax down to at least 25 yards, and with 30 moa rail get you out to at least 300 yards. In my personal opinion, the midas tac series is the best bag for buck. Good glass, great turret, and amazing reticle, and I say great turret as in singular, because it's capped windage. I don't often recommend dialing windage, especially for newer shooters, because its one more thing to keep track of. Which ever one you pick do yourself a favor go MIL, even if you're an MOA guy. Yeah there's calculators and conversions, but it's a lot simpler to talk elevation and wind call feed back from other shooters that are ALL in mil, and its faster to read/dial/write/say numbers like 4.4 versus 15.25, 10-30 times in a match.
